SUMMARY
The Terminal Manager is responsible for the hiring, supervising and training of Transport Drivers while ensuring compliance with all government regulations and company policies. Responsible for all safety and operational aspects of the assigned terminal in accordance with Company guidelines. Responsibilities include but not limited to, assisting in the make ready of new equipment, yard maintenance, driver supplies, updating handheld devices, and performing inspections of equipment. Assist in communication between dispatch and maintenance on equipment needs and concerns.
RESPONSIBILITIES BY COMPETENCY: (*denotes an essential function of the position)
Business Results Orientation
● Effectively evaluate and balance delivery requirements (location, product, timing, and routing), drivers’ hour limitations, pricing margins and other variables
● Inventory terminal supplies and equipment and replenish as needed
● Work with dispatch to effectively evaluate multiple selection criteria, such as location, products, driver’s hour limitations, available vehicle space and other variables to ensure daily execution for accurate, timely and profitable delivery routes
● Ensure proper safety procedures are being practiced daily and are in compliance with all government regulations
● Evaluate processes, equipment, and facility capabilities to improve efficiency and effectiveness to achieve terminal, divisional and company goals
● Actively recruit, perform interviews for prospective employees and oversee the hiring process while working to retain existing drivers
● Organize and direct terminal operations in all facets of transportation services
● Ensure local fleet operations are in full compliance with DOT regulations
● Assist with dispatch duties when scheduled or as needed
● Monitor and direct special freight movement situations
● Ensure all required reporting and documents are completed and submitted in a timely manner
● Resolve any scheduling, maintenance, administrative, and non-conformance issues
● Maintain regular attendance and follow designated safety practices
● Perform other duties not listed as required
Communication
● Communicates in a professional, courteous, appropriate, and effective manner with internal and external customers, including direct reports
● Follow up and follow through on issues, projects or task within their scope of responsibility
● Coordinate repairs and maintenance for trucks/equipment associated with their respective terminal
● Serve as the primary contact for drivers with a problem/concern, and work to resolve the issue
● Communicate driver performance with applicable supervisor as needed
● Communicate and drive strategies from the Balanced Score Card
● Report any personal injuries or any damage done to company property or vehicles within policy timeframe
● Exhibits excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
Customer Service Orientation
● Communicate with customers to provide updates and resolve issues, including driver related complaints
● Maintain positive relationships with drivers, dispatch, administrative, and maintenance personnel
● Handle all customer phone calls in a professional and respectful manner
● Provide emergency/unscheduled assistance as needed
● Schedule, prioritize, and monitor fuel loads to keep customers full or at a level needed to suit business needs while dispatching
Developing Talent
● Coach drivers and maintain documents on incidents relative to policy or government regulation violations as well as performance
● Attend training to further professional development and understanding of company goals and strategy
● Ensure performance appraisal system is executed according to company standards and coaching is ongoing throughout the year
● Contact Human Resources for advice/assistance in hiring, counseling, appraising or terminating as necessary
● Ensure reports adhere to policies and procedures defined by Company policy, training guides, job description, etc.
● Train reports and others within the department on dispatch functions as needed
Safety
● Coordinate and schedule regular safety meetings and engaging direct reports in value added discussions
● Work diligently to correct safety deficiencies in a timely manner
● Strive to avoid preventable accidents and ensure timely reporting of any safety incidents (employee, customer, environmental) to management and human resources
● Investigate all work-related and/or customer injury/property damage accidents, identifying the conditions responsible and corrective action needed
● Complete safety training required for this position
● Adhere to all Wallis Companies safety policies and report all safety incidents to supervisor immediately
● Report all work-related injuries immediately and seek Supervisor/HR approval to authorize medical treatment
● Cooperate with the medical provider and follow the treatment plan and Return to Work Program
● Serve as a part of the Company Emergency Response Team
● Perform periodic inspections of equipment
● Ensure safe working conditions
● Demonstrate knowledge of hazardous materials and DOT regulations as it relates to transportation
Technical Expertise
● Comply with and support safety standards, as well as all regulatory and company policies and procedures *Maintain knowledge of and follow all DOT rules and regulations, company policies and procedures, and any other regulations required![]()
● Develop and maintain a thorough knowledge of the region in which Transport operates
● Calculate daily fuel sales and dispatch loads for re-supply
● Assist in direction of maintenance and safety of fleet
● Assist in creating mapping information for personnel
● Organize maintenance for the terminal yard (gravel, snow, fence, etc.)
● Maintain a good understanding of the trucking industry
● Ensure functionality of technology requirements needed to achieve business results (i.e. electronic logging devices, Kindles, etc.)
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Direct: Transport Drivers
This position is responsible for directly managing all drivers for a specified terminal and is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of each person. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include planning, assigning and directing work, managing training and certifications, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees up to and including termination with supervisor’s approval, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School diploma or equivalent; Broad specialized training
equivalent to college education
Experience: Class A CDL with Hazmat and Tanker Endorsement; Experience in
dispatch
Language Skills: Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English in a manner
that is sufficient for effective communication with groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public
Skills and Abilities:
